Won't Cancel cards - Pass

I purchased three American Express PASS cards for my daughters a few years ago. In January their computer had a glitch that cause the cards to be loaded up to 5 times per day without my permission. After calling multiple times, speaking to many employees, supervisors, etc I finally (1 month later) had the money credited back to me. I told them I wanted the cards cancelled immediately. The cards still show that they are suspended online with the same zero balance since February. I told the customer service rep I want written verification that the accounts are closed. I was told they can't do that and was put on hold to speak to a supervisor. Why is it so hard to cancel zero balance accounts and provide verification???
