  • Application Nightmare

Last month I applied for an American Express card through CostCo. I have a six figure income and a FICO score of 820. I have multiple credit cards, all with virtually no balances, each paid monthly. I get invitations from Am Ex almost monthly to apply for a card. Application should be a breeze. Nope, nada. First I get an application pending delay. Then they say I have a fraud alert of some kind, again delaying the application. Next they do not have my SSN, once again a delay. Next they do not have my telephone number. Yep, another delay. Now a supervisor of some sort needs to... More...

  • In one Day - 27 charges that were not ours

We have regular AMEX cards and have had no problems. We got Prepaid AMEX card for travel. We were checking our account November 10th and was shocked that it was minus $20.64 and not the $2500 we put in this summer. Discovered 27 charges on October 7th all to Exxonmobile in Florida (we live in California). We have been on the phone almost daily with no resolve. They tell us they will email dispute "form" we must send in writing, but after 5 attempts to get form - no show. We took it upon our selves and sent UPS Next Day (cost of $37) that these are not our charges - we have... More...

American Express may think they are an elite credit card company but their customer service and care of their consumers is the worst. I have been a member since 1987 and most of that time, until recently, was a satisfied customer. But since recent incident involving my credit card management, I think they are horrible with consumer satisfaction. I have seriously considered cancelling but, only out of inconvenience, have not. I know I am just a minor problem with this complaint but it just feels good to vent. I so wish there was some way someone of importance with this credit card... More...

  • Rewards Taken Away

I recently turned in my notice to my employer, Fresenius Medical Care. As a result, they chose to terminate my employment on October 3rd, along with my corporate AMEX card. I had spend my own money to sign up for the rewards program, and went to utilize my points. Unfortunately I was told that since my employer took too long to reimburse me with over $10,000 so I could pay off my bill, and the card was already cancelled that I would not be awarded these points, which would account for nearly $100 in rewards. This is not an acceptable practice, I earned these points and although I... More...

We recently signed up for amex gold with delta sky miles. The deal was if we spend $1000 in the first 3 months we would get 30k miles. The next day we got the same offer in an email but for 50k miles. We called to see if we could get that offer since we just applied and havent even activated the card. They said they could not honor the 50k. Well if they can help us out by honoring that we will not be giving them our business by using the card. Bad business!!! More...

  • misleading policies

Using American Express Travel to make hotel reservation, I found that the the banner of "low price guarantee" above rates do not necessarily apply to the rate they are showing -- misleading since fine print effectively negates that guarantee -- and when asked, response from agent on phone was that the banner is not associated with the rate.... In addiition, while most hotel sites make it quite clear (usually in BOLD letters) that a rate is nonrefundable, American Express Travel does not do so -- need to click on fine print again. Hotels not only indicate such by the rate but... More...

i have cancelled my attempts to apply for an american express blue everyday card when i encountered inept customer service from an offshore call center. the several calls i made were conducted with what seemed to be persons to whom english was not a first language. i think a company that calls itself "american" express would use offshore call centers. whatever money they save in lower labor costs be damned.. i will never own an american express card after my totally frustrating and annoying experiences with their foreign call centers. • They don't want your business

A representative within the cancellation department misinterpreted a conversation in which the phone line was disconnected prior to the end of the call. After that call, I was surprised to find my account closed the next day. I immediately called to have my account reinstated. After much hassle and time, I spoke with Angela Selma, Chief of Customer Service, who informed me that she was unwilling to reinstate the account because she didn't think an error was made. She told me that I would need to write a letter to the executive office to have the account reinstated. This... More...

  • New Customer Service Sucks!

I've had a charge card with AMX since 2005. I have not had one complaint with in AMX in all these years until now. Their customer service used to be fantastic, but it sucks now. It's apparent they have changed the agency they worked with. I called to understand my statement and inquire about some of my charges which I paid with my rewards b/c the statement did not reflect them. The rep was very slow, did not understand my question, and would keep repeating this narrated statement. It was awful. I wrote to them to complain, and they wrote back apologizing for the bad customer... More...

  • Customer Service is Getting Bad

I've been a member of American Express since 2005 and I have both, a charge card, and a credit card. However, in the past 6 months, they must have changed their customer service agency because they seem not to be able to understand my issues when I call them. They are very slow at responding to my questions, and instead of answering my questions they provide this narrated answer, which does not make any sense. It's like they are placing the onus on me to understand how their statement is now represented, which does not reflect my rewards deductions. I'm growing so frustrated... More...

I have been making my payment on the last day of the month for more than a year now, which makes it early. I always pay more than required and frequently pay my balance in full. On May 16th I paid my balance in full, but made a purchase on the 21st, because I paid my balance early I received a late fee charge because of the purchase.....this company doesn't want to keep loyal customers. • ACCOUNT CLOSED IN ERROR

My American Express is linked to my Costco Membership. Back in February I received a letter from AMEX regarding my Costco membership. I called the day I received the letter and provided my Costco Membership, and was told a new card with my new Costco Membership number would be sent. I called every other week to check on my AMEX and was told multiple times a card had been shipped. I spoke to multiple supervisors and after 2 months of going back and forth I finally received my new replacement card from AMEX on May 8th. Someone is using my email account for their American Express online account. I too have an American Express account so I cannot just create a filter and trash them all. American Express fails to use email verification, allowing users to purposefully or accidentally attach the wrong email to their account. This is bad practice and amateurish. • I'm Done With Them!

Member since 99 and have watched the company go downhill lately. Just cancelled my Delta Airlines Platnum card. Straw that broke the camel's back was AmEx's refusal to acknowledge an airline ticket purchase on 12/31/13 towards my 2013 spend limit. I feel I did my part, they refuse budge so I missed the step by $800. Are you kidding me! I'm a customer who for the last several years has spent $60,000 or more on their card and they refuse to accept an airline ticket (Delta none the less) which would make my spend step. On December 18th I tried to place an online order for Best Buy. After several tries to place my order, my card would not go through. I then tried another website to place an order. My card was declined. I then went to check my bank account and noticed I only had 158.00. This was very strange due to me just getting paid on this day. I then checked my transactions to see that not only did blue bird charge my card, but they charged me three times for a total of 604.05. I then called best buy to get this straight. Back in 2010, I applied for the AMEX Platinum Delta Skymiles card. Delta is my preferred airline and the benefits to coupling the two was a no brainer. I spend $3000 in 90 days and I get a bunch of Qualifying Miles on Delta. I applied online the 3rd week of October and was immediately approved for an $8600 line. I ran up about $5000 in the first month, on purpose because the card’s benefits encourage you to do that kind of thing. Two weeks ago I received an American Express gift card for my birthday. As luck would have it, I misplaced it after only a few days. (I never even used it). One of the perks of an American Express gift card is that they offer free replacement of lost or stolen cards. I called the same day that I realized it was missing. Hello, I recently applied for an American Express and got approved. When I received the card with the conditions, not only were very different as stated in their website, but they also gave a very low credit limit. I was very disappointed so I decided to close the account without activating the card. After 2 weeks I realized that I could have gotten a higher limit after 60 days so I asked to be reinstated. They denied me without using the same criteria as I applied. Unbelievable, more considering that I have a high FICO and I always have paid on time. They are not good in retaining people... More...

This is a different form of complaint. I applied for a position with AMEX in the UK. AMERICAN EXPRESS IS THE WORST!!! I have been a member since 1987 and their company is just not the same. DO NOT USE THEM. Their customer service is awful. My story is too long to tell but was extremely unhappy with them. It is hard to say goodbye to a company I have been with so long but they don't deserve my business.

I do a significant amount of business and personal shopping at Costco, and have an AMEX gold card that I try to use exclusively for all my shoping to maximize on collecting points. I will not be using the AMEX card much anymore now that AMEX and Costco Canada have severed their agreement. Although I would prefer to use my AMEX Card, It makes more sense to replace my Amex card with my Visa card to consolidate my point collection. Its unfortunate that Costco is not willing to accept multiple types of cards.

I have been with Amex for 31years and never had a problem. I was on the phone for over 90minutes today and 4 phone calls. I was transferred, hung up on and a transferred call to India who didn't give a damn about customer service.
After all this no resolution to my accounts.
It appears there is no customer service for loyal customers.
A totally horrible experience.

I had been an American Express Platinum cardholder for 25 years. I had signed on to an agreement for a company to supply services for a year. I later discovered the company was a fraud. They were no longer the licensed company they claimed to be and had entered into with me in a contract. i contacted American Express to explain to them that this company had been a fraud and that their corporation no longer existed. American Express did nothing but write letters and forward the responses. They claimed that there was nothing else they can do. I imagine they still do business with this fraudulent company.
What a joke AX is!!!!

I purchased 2 American Express prepaid gift cards through AAA membership website in December of last year, I called and cancelled the cards and requested for a refund because I did not the the cards after all. This is now febuary and I have not received the refund back in my visa card . When I called the customer service I have been told the refund is processed and it will take 15 days, I waited 15 days I did not get the money, I called the customer service again, the refused had to be processed again and I was again told it will take another 15 days to process. Today 2/12/2013 I have not received my money or refund . I. Gave them a call and a guy over the phone told me sorry mem" I. Will have to place an order because for your refund, and is there anything I could help you with. It will take about 15 to 20 days for the refund to come through.. I am very frustrated and disappointed.with company and their outsourced customer service employees. Is their any one who can tell me how I can get my money refunded sooner or tell me what else I do.

I have been with american Express for over 30 years. I reecently telehphoned them to ask if it would be in order to pay my monthy due two weeks late, to whcih I was told 'no problem'. I subsequently found that a 'late payment' had been recorded with the credit agencies, as to which, if I had been warned, I would have made the payment on time. When I complained I received a very rude and authoitarian letter from a woman referring me to the agreement. I telephoned her senior, who agreed that this should not ahve been done. After receivng another letter from the obviously very angry woman, I tried to contact the senior again three times, but who ignored my comunications and refused to come to the phone. I have now referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman and am writing to the CEO in the US.

In March 2009, I paid off the entire balance and with out warning, American express canceled my account. When I called to see why I was told that after checking my credit history that my balances on a few other accounts were high. American express can keep their card But their actions will lower my credit score.

It's nice not to be alone, but it's really sad that AMEX can do whatever to customers and there is no recourse. I haven't been a customer as long as many of you; just since 2006. My credit line wasn't as high either; just $1200.00. But I always paid on time if not before time and mostly more than the previous month's balance because of the low limit and I had liked being able to manage something in my life. I went to use the card to rent a car to see my kids last weekend and when I got to the counter the poor clerk had to tell me my card was canceled. Not declined - because I had just made a $500.00 payment to cover the travel I was anticipating. AMEX didn't even have the decency to inform me ahead of time so at least I could prepare. I understand they have every right according to their "agreement" but my financial situation didn't get the way it is overnight and AMEX has definitely been aware of its status the entire time. I depended on that card and it sucks that consideration can't even be given on a humane basis.

I HAD been a member of american express for over ten years with three acoounts until October 08

I have never been late, always paid my balances off and in late september I received an e-mail telling me that they had either lowered my credit lines or removed my ability to pay over time. now keep in mind one of my accounts had a $27,000.00 line of credit and they lowered it to $500.00 and I won't go into detail about what horrible things they did to my other accounts but needless to say none of my accounts are worth using now nor would I.

It's sad to hear that they are laying off people but I hope everyone stops use there cards and boycotts them!!!!!

It would bring me much pleasure to hear that they are filing for bankruptcy because all of us that did absolutely nothing to them but pay our bills and be loyal to them brought them to their knees!!!

I recently tried to make reservations for a hotel in Manhattan, but was cut down by some frustrated supervisor who thought he was talking to his mother. I am a custormer for a hundred years and donot need to be bullied by this ignoramous.
